UrVoiz Fights Texting While Driving with New Voice App

August 17, 2012

UrVoiz, a new iPhone (News - Alert) application, lets users send voice messages to their phone to update their social networks. The idea behind the application is to allow drivers to take advantage of an “eyes-free” mobile experience.

UrVoiz created the application to allow for minimal user involvement, while providing a safer way for people to communicate using their smartphones.

IDC (News - Alert), a global market intelligence firm, estimates that over 400 million smartphones were sold in 2011. At this point, almost everyone has a cell phone and chances are they send text messages.

Text messages are becoming an increasingly popular way to communicate by allowing friends to send brief messages of up to 140 characters that can be sent or received on most cell phones.

But texting has turned dangerous. People have become so addicted to using their cell phone that they’re now texting while driving. Stop Texts Stop Wrecks, a texting and driving prevention organization, said that using a cell phone while driving can delay a driver’s reaction time as much as having a blood alcohol concentration of .08 percent.

The organization added that of those killed in 2009, 995 involved reports of a cell phone as a distraction. These numbers have become alarming, and UrVoiz has taken notice deciding to add more voice-friendly features to its application.

Features of UrVoiz’s app include a group voice messaging service, which lets users record a message and send it to multiple people as compared to calling each one individually and leaving messages; voice blogging, which allows users to update a personalized website through voice messages; and minimal button-pushing, allowing for users to really have a hands-free experience.

“With the need to ban texting while driving to avoid distracted drivers, UrVoiz could be an ideal alternative as it reduces the human interface while sending the messages to a significant degree,” said one reviewer.

CEO Ram Yalamachili said he wanted to harness the power of voice communication. “Voice communication allows people to express in their tongue with all the nuances. The application was started with the belief that voice communicates better than text,” he said.

UrVoiz is available for free download through Apple’s (News - Alert) iTunes store, and can be used on all of Apple’s portable devices.
